Exploring the relations between art and nature, 'Still Lives' looks at ideas and problems that have motivated artworks through the centuries. Confronting the ways art endeavours to capture the fleeting beauties of life or find perfection in the order underlying nature, the exhibition questions the relationship between the manmade and the natural, the permanent and the perishing, the real and the imagined. How can art convey the beauty of nature? Are images just substitutes for the real? Where does abstraction meet experience? Does a stilled life become something different entirely? Featuring ceramics, sculpture, driftwood and photography, 'Still Lives' aims to examine a multitude of approaches, create contrasts and raise questions about what art really can do with nature.
